May fix #1744

Two tests had previously used tempfile.gettempdir() directly to get a directory to make assertions about, such as not being a valid git repository. One other test had created a repository at a hard-coded location relative to it, which in effect also assumed the availability of that path, a condition that may not hold, due either to GitPython's own previous test runs, unrelated use of those paths in a location like /tmp, or possibly other conditions. This uses newly created directories instead whose contents are known.

The tests this makes more robust include test_new_should_raise_on_invalid_repo_location, which is the one reported as failing on OpenIndiana in the build described in #1744. I believe this fully remedies that problem, but I do not believe it with high confidence. I had some trouble getting oi-userland set up in a way that would enable me to efficiently test this, and I would not be sure I had reproduced the precise conditions of the actual build.

I believe these improvements are worthwhile even separately from that, since the assumptions about tempfile.gettempdir() and its preexisting contents are minor test bugs in and of themselves. So I'm opening this PR now, but I want to make clear that while I believe this addresses #1744, I cannot be certain.

In part to make the tests more comprehensive, and in part because I think it may be relevant to the situation there, this also adds a related test, test_new_should_raise_on_invalid_repo_location_within_repo. This verifies that calling Repo on a directory that is not a git repository and that is known to reside inside a directory that is a git repository gives the same error as we expect when it is not (known to be) inside a repository.

A few more details are in commit messages, including on one of the tests that, while being made no longer to use a hard-coded path under tempfile.gettempdir(), now does its cleanup a little differently and cleanup now succeeds on it. So this turns out to be a small step toward #790.

test_new_should_raise_on_invalid_repo_location had previously used
tempfile.gettempdir() directly to get a path assumed not to be a
valid repository, assuming more than necessary about the directory
in which temporary files and directories are created. A newly
created temporary directory is now used for that check, instead.

test_new_should_raise_on_non_existent_path had assumed no
repos/foobar existed relative to the current directory. Typically
there would be no such directory, but is unnecessary for the test
to rely on this. A newly created temporary directory known to be
empty is now used in place of the "repos" component, for that test.
test_init was using tempfile.gettempdir() directly to get the
location where the hard-coded path repos/foo/bar.git would be used
to test repository creation with relative and absolute paths. That
reused the same location each time, and also assumed the directory
would be usable, which could fail due to previous runs or due to
the path being used separately from GitPython's tests. This commit
fixes that by using that path inside a temporary directory, known
at the start of the test to be empty.

Reorganizing the acquision and cleanup logic also has had the
effect of causing the test no longer to be skipped due to the logic
in git.util.rmtree due to the final cleanup attempt (after all
assertions). The directory is now successfully removed on Windows,
and the test passes on all platforms.
A Repo object can of course be constructed from a path to a
directory that is the root of an existing repository, and raises
InvalidGitRepositoryError on a directory that is outside of any
repository. Tests intended to show both conditions already exist.

This adds a test to verify that InvalidGitRepositoryError is also
raised when an attempt is made to construct a Repo object from a
path to a directory that is not the root of a repository but that
is known to be located inside an existing git repository.

Thanks so much for these improvements, and even for trying to reproduce the issue on OpenIndiana!

Having reacquainted myself to the respective issue, I noticed that to this time it's unclear why that happens in the first place. After all, we could determine that GIT_DIR isn't overriding the provided path, nor does it try to break out of the path (by default).

The new test also validates that this is the case, so it's still puzzling what's truly happening there.

PS: It's interesting that the author and committer name has changed to Travis Runner, which makes me wonder if this is related to Travis CI in any way. I assume it's intentional, too, but it the similarity puzzled me.

Sorry, where is this? (I possibly should know what that is a screenshot of, but I do not.)

Tests on CI set user.name to Travis Runner and user.email to travis@ci.com, but this has been the case for a while and I am not aware of a way that this PR should change anything related to that.

I assume it's intentional, too, but it the similarity puzzled me.

I may be misunderstanding you, but I have not intended any change related to commit authors in tests or otherwise, in this PR.

Apologies for the small screenshot, I realize how it's unclear about that it is really showing.

The new screenshot probably remedies that:

Somehow these commits don't have your name anymore, just as if something changed your global configuration.

Thanks for pointing that out. My global user.name was indeed changed, on my Windows system, from Eliah Kagan to Travis Runner. I had not noticed that, and I have fairly little idea how it happened! It was very much not intentional.

But it doesn't seem to be related to this issue in any way, because the change goes all the way back to 39e2dff. Every once in a while I paste something into my terminal and I'm so sure it's what I want that I click yes on the message box that comes up to warn me that it is multiple lines. I recall pasting some YAML from a workflow by accident at some point. Probably it ran something from there. I'm not really sure about this, though, since I can't find it in my shell's history. But if that's what happened, then I wonder what else also got changed... 😦

@EliahKagan
Copy link

Update: I'm going to go with the accidental pasting explanation, even though it is incomplete, because it makes a lot of sense given the YAML code:

      run: |
        git config --global user.email "travis@ci.com"
        git config --global user.name "Travis Runner"

In a POSIX-compatible (Bourne style) shell, and I think most Unix-style shells, the | after run: would not suppress the command on the next line: it would be on the right side of a pipe, but it would never read from stdin (because git config is noninteractive) and it would perform its side effect. But in PowerShell that's not the case: if the command on the left side of | is not found, the right-side command does not run. Then the command to set user.email does not run, but the subsequent command to set user.name does.

Therefore, I do not believe this is a regression or other issue in GitPython. In investigating #1744 (if that turns out not to be fixed now), this Travis Runner business can probably be disregarded.

### GitHub Vulnerability Alerts

####
[CVE-2024-22190](https://togithub.com/gitpython-developers/GitPython/security/advisories/GHSA-2mqj-m65w-jghx)

### Summary

This issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2023-40590. On
Windows, GitPython uses an untrusted search path if it uses a shell to
run `git`, as well as when it runs `bash.exe` to interpret hooks. If
either of those features are used on Windows, a malicious `git.exe` or
`bash.exe` may be run from an untrusted repository.

### Details

Although GitPython often avoids executing programs found in an untrusted
search path since 3.1.33, two situations remain where this still occurs.
Either can allow arbitrary code execution under some circumstances.

#### When a shell is used

GitPython can be told to run `git` commands through a shell rather than
as direct subprocesses, by passing `shell=True` to any method that
accepts it, or by both setting `Git.USE_SHELL = True` and not passing
`shell=False`. Then the Windows `cmd.exe` shell process performs the
path search, and GitPython does not prevent that shell from finding and
running `git` in the current directory.

When GitPython runs `git` directly rather than through a shell, the
GitPython process performs the path search, and currently omits the
current directory by setting `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` in its
own environment during the `Popen` call. Although the `cmd.exe` shell
will honor this environment variable when present, GitPython does not
currently pass it into the shell subprocess's environment.

Furthermore, because GitPython sets the subprocess CWD to the root of a
repository's working tree, using a shell will run a malicious `git.exe`
in an untrusted repository even if GitPython itself is run from a
trusted location.

This also applies if `Git.execute` is called directly with `shell=True`
(or after `Git.USE_SHELL = True`) to run any command.

#### When hook scripts are run

On Windows, GitPython uses `bash.exe` to run hooks that appear to be
scripts. However, unlike when running `git`, no steps are taken to avoid
finding and running `bash.exe` in the current directory.

This allows the author of an untrusted fork or branch to cause a
malicious `bash.exe` to be run in some otherwise safe workflows. An
example of such a scenario is if the user installs a trusted hook while
on a trusted branch, then switches to an untrusted feature branch
(possibly from a fork) to review proposed changes. If the untrusted
feature branch contains a malicious `bash.exe` and the user's current
working directory is the working tree, and the user performs an action
that runs the hook, then although the hook itself is uncorrupted, it
runs with the malicious `bash.exe`.

Note that, while `bash.exe` is a shell, this is a separate scenario from
when `git` is run using the unrelated Windows `cmd.exe` shell.

### PoC

On Windows, create a `git.exe` file in a repository. Then create a
`Repo` object, and call any method through it (directly or indirectly)
that supports the `shell` keyword argument with `shell=True`:

```powershell
mkdir testrepo
git init testrepo
cp ... testrepo git.exe # Replace "..." with any executable of choice.
python -c "import git; print(git.Repo('testrepo').git.version(shell=True))"
```

The `git.exe` executable in the repository directory will be run.

Or use no `Repo` object, but do it from the location with the `git.exe`:

```powershell
cd testrepo
python -c "import git; print(git.Git().version(shell=True))"
```

The `git.exe` executable in the current directory will be run.

For the scenario with hooks, install a hook in a repository, create a
`bash.exe` file in the current directory, and perform an operation that
causes GitPython to attempt to run the hook:

```powershell
mkdir testrepo
cd testrepo
git init
mv .git/hooks/pre-commit.sample .git/hooks/pre-commit
cp ... bash.exe # Replace "..." with any executable of choice.
echo "Some text" >file.txt
git add file.txt
python -c "import git; git.Repo().index.commit('Some message')"
```

The `bash.exe` executable in the current directory will be run.

### Impact

The greatest impact is probably in applications that set `Git.USE_SHELL
= True` for historical reasons. (Undesired console windows had, in the
past, been created in some kinds of applications, when it was not used.)
Such an application may be vulnerable to arbitrary code execution from a
malicious repository, even with no other exacerbating conditions. This
is to say that, if a shell is used to run `git`, the full effect of
CVE-2023-40590 is still present. Furthermore, as noted above, running
the application itself from a trusted directory is not a sufficient
mitigation.

An application that does not direct GitPython to use a shell to run
`git` subprocesses thus avoids most of the risk. However, there is no
such straightforward way to prevent GitPython from running `bash.exe` to
interpret hooks. So while the conditions needed for that to be exploited
are more involved, it may be harder to mitigate decisively prior to
patching.

### Possible solutions

A straightforward approach would be to address each bug directly:

- When a shell is used, pass `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` into
the subprocess environment, because in that scenario the subprocess is
the `cmd.exe` shell that itself performs the path search.
- Set `NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath` in the GitPython process
environment during the `Popen` call made to run hooks with a `bash.exe`
subprocess.

These need only be done on Windows.
